Nissan Patrol TD4.2 - Stage 1 Performance Turbocharger

Nissan Patrol TD4.2 - Stage 1 Performance Turbocharger

Introducing the Nissan Patrol TD4.2 - Stage 1 Performance Turbocharger, an upgrade that promises to take your Patrol’s power and performance to unparalleled heights. This turbocharger is designed for enthusiasts who crave more from their vehicle, offering enhanced efficiency, reliability, and an adrenaline-pumping boost in power. However, please note that custom fabrication is required to fit this turbocharger, as it does not bolt on directly.

Engineered for Performance

Starting with the robust GT2359V, also known as the GTA2359LV, originally designed for the 1HD-FTE 4.2D motor, this turbocharger serves as the foundation for your Nissan Patrol’s performance transformation. The compressor wheel has been upgraded to a 48/65mm German-engineered billet compressor wheel—a marvel of modern engineering. Its state-of-the-art geometry and ultra-lightweight design ensure that your engine breathes more efficiently, delivering a noticeable increase in power and responsiveness.

The compressor housing is precision-machined to H7 ISO standards, guaranteeing perfect bore tolerance and optimal airflow. The variable geometry control has been meticulously adjusted to allow 15% more exhaust gas flow, which translates to reduced turbo lag, lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs), and a smoother, more consistent boost.

Unrivaled Reliability

Reliability is at the core of the Aus Dyno turbocharger’s design. Precise balancing is crucial to ensuring both performance and longevity. Every Aus Dyno turbocharger undergoes rigorous balancing procedures to meet our strict standards. Components are balanced at slow speeds using CNC machinery before being dynamically balanced at extreme speeds—well over 150,000 RPM—using the Cimat VSR48 Big Twin machine. This meticulous process ensures that your turbocharger not only outperforms but also outlasts the competition, delivering a driving experience that is smooth, powerful, and reliable.

Fitment and Compatibility

This turbocharger is designed to work with the 1HD-FTE engine, specifically those equipped with the VGT GT2359V or GTA2359LV turbochargers. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the Nissan Patrol TD42 models fitted with gated turbochargers. To successfully install this turbocharger on a Nissan Patrol TD4.2, custom fabrication is required, including a new manifold, intake pipes, oil lines, and water lines. We are currently collaborating with another business to develop a manifold for direct fitment, but in the meantime, custom fabrication is essential.

A Note on Installation

Given the advanced nature of this turbocharger, installation should be performed by a professional with experience in custom fabrication. The additional components required, such as the manifold and piping, must be sourced and fitted correctly to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Elevate Your Nissan Patrol’s Performance

The Nissan Patrol TD4.2 - Stage 1 Performance Turbocharger is more than just an upgrade—it’s a complete transformation of your vehicle’s capabilities. With this turbocharger, your Patrol will boast double the airflow, reduced lag, lower EGTs, and an overall driving experience that’s smoother, more powerful, and incredibly exhilarating. If you’re serious about performance, this turbocharger is your ticket to unlocking the full potential of your Nissan Patrol. Get ready to dominate the road and beyond!

When fitting the Stage 1 Performance Turbocharger to your Nissan Patrol TD4.2, there are several critical considerations and precautions to keep in mind to ensure both safety and optimal performance. This turbocharger represents a significant upgrade over the stock unit and requires careful attention to tuning and setup.

Professional Tuning is Highly Recommended

Given the advanced nature of this turbocharger, professional tuning is not just recommended—it’s essential. Proper tuning ensures that your engine and turbo work in harmony, delivering the power you desire without compromising reliability. A professional tuner will be able to adjust the fueling, boost levels, and other critical parameters to get the best performance from this turbocharger.

VNT/VGT Controller Requirements

This turbocharger is equipped with Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) technology, which is vacuum-controlled—a significant difference from the pressure-controlled mechanisms found in gated turbos. To manage this turbo effectively, you will need a GFB VNT or a similar VNT/VGT controller. This controller regulates the turbo’s variable geometry, ensuring the correct flow and boost levels under various driving conditions.

Avoid Excessive Rise Rate Adjustments

When tuning for boost levels higher than 24 PSI, it is crucial not to excessively increase the rise rate to improve spool-up times. This directly alters the VNT position, which, if not properly controlled, can cause the turbocharger to overspeed. Overspeeding can lead to catastrophic failures, such as the turbocharger exploding or the VNT vanes bending or melting.

Boost Pressure Considerations

Do not exceed 24 PSI with this turbocharger. Due to the design of the VNT control system, pushing beyond this limit without proper consideration can lead to turbo overspeeding, which significantly increases the risk of mechanical failure. If you are aiming for more power than what 24 PSI can provide, consider a larger turbo designed to handle higher flow and pressures safely. That said, with a 12mm pump and proper modifications, it’s possible your tuner may see boost pressures as high as 30 PSI.

Check for Boost Leaks

Ensuring there are no boost leaks is crucial. Boost leaks in the system can cause the VNT-controlled turbo to overspeed as it attempts to compensate for the lost pressure. This not only diminishes performance but also puts the turbo at serious risk of failure. Regular checks and maintenance of all connections, hoses, and seals are necessary to avoid this issue.

Exhaust Manifold Temperatures (EGTs)

Monitor your Exhaust Manifold Temperatures (EGTs) closely, especially on the pressure side. Do not exceed 750°C, as higher temperatures can cause severe damage to the engine, particularly the piston crowns. Keeping EGTs in check is vital for maintaining engine integrity and longevity, especially under high-performance conditions.

Improved Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is drastically improved due to increased airflow at low RPM. Peak turbo efficiency is achieved at 2000 RPM, meaning that at cruising speeds, the turbo is delivering the most air with the least amount of effort. Get ready to enjoy better mileage and a more efficient driving experience.

Compatibility with Fuel Pumps

The performance capabilities of this turbocharger exceed the capacity of the stock 11mm fuel pump. If you plan to push the TD42 further, you should consider upgrading to a larger pump, such as a 12mm unit. However, even with a 12mm pump, significantly higher power goals will require a larger turbocharger.

Injector Considerations

During tuning, you may find that your injectors need replacement. Faulty or worn injectors can cause uneven fuel distribution and lead to excessive EGTs. Ensuring that your injectors are in good working condition is essential for achieving balanced and efficient combustion, which is critical for keeping temperatures under control and maximizing performance.

Comprehensive Testing and Ideal Setup

Through comprehensive testing on the TD42 engine, we have determined that this turbocharger is ideal for factory pump setups. However, it performs best with careful tuning, particularly guided by manifold EGTs. A well-tuned system with this turbocharger will deliver impressive performance gains while maintaining reliability.

Final Thoughts

The Nissan Patrol TD4.2 - Stage 1 Performance Turbocharger is a powerful upgrade that, when properly installed and tuned, can significantly enhance your vehicle’s performance. However, it requires careful handling, especially concerning boost control, EGT management, and fuel system compatibility. By following these guidelines and working with a skilled tuner, you can unlock the full potential of this turbocharger while ensuring the longevity and safety of your engine.
